June 2005

Howdy all,

The past few weeks have been a busy one on the recording front. I had several "firsts". Not the least of which, was recording at the Economy Inn behind KPIG radio with Dan Walsh from Fred Eaglesmith's outfit. I'd never tracked in a 1/2 star hotel before, and I do believe it's the wave of the future, or maybe the crest of the wave of the recent past....in either case it was a fun one to do. Technology reared it's convenient head in the form of recording via the US Postal Service. My pal Rick Shea (www.rickshea.com) mailed me a CD to add some fiddle to, which saved me a trip to LA and him a trip to Santa Cruz... he'll just have to trust that I found the right key. Earlier in May, I was invited to record with the Two High String Band (www.highstring.com) in Canada. They're a Texas band, and I wasn't sure why they wanted to do this in Canada until I arrived, and saw the place they had selected. Think Gilligan's Island meets Julia Child. Eagles, orcas, and gourmet seafood all wrapped up in a great project due out in January '06(I hope that's close Billy!)

Although it was recorded in April, the post-production was done in May, and I should be receiving the DVD of my show at Arden's Garden down in Monterey very soon, and will upload it to the website for viewing...check out how green I look (if you were at the taping, you know what I mean, and thanks for your patience)...

And last, but absolutely not least was sending the new Houston Jones (www.houstonjones.com) project off to the factory. It will be officially released and for sale on June 4th, but I do believe orders are being accepted at their website.

Next up...hmmm...maybe I should finish my CD...but at the same time I'll be working on my archive webpage. I have some reel to reel tapes (hopefully undemagnetized (a mighty big word), a 45 (my first studio experience), a few 33 LP's, cassettes, wax cylinders, and 8 track tapes, dating from around 1973 to the present. Some were recorded live in some Montana/Wyoming/North Dakota clubs with the Lost Highway Band, some at Augie Meyers studio in Bulverde, Texas, and some I have absolutely no idea where they came from. No comments about tuning please....

I do have some June gigs coming up, and hope to see you at one or all........
